Since we already have 5 such facilities in Silver Lake now how many more do we need? The operators have a lousy record with their neighbors so unless you know what is going on suggesting support is irresponsible. Moving forward sounds like a Jonestown cult.

“I have concerns about adding more violent and mentally ill felons to the neighborhood.”

The jump to mentally ill "felons" is a bit much, but scare techniques are often successful.

The jump to "violent" is a bit much. Scare techniques are however often successful.

Who precisely would be integrated into the neighborhood? Your article does not inform me. Have you as journalists informed the neighborhood? If you have not, can you explain to me why you have not.

I am 72, at many times in my past I have read of similar reactions to integrating neighborhoods, Jackie Robinson's residence was opposed, he was one among many people claimed did not belong in "their" neighborhood. Caricature had so influenced people that they could not see even that hero as a good neighbor.

Many such attitudes continue, including today "mentally ill felons." Only education will overcome it: So, journalists, please inform us accurately and specifically about who will be helped by this integration.

I think the zoo should be closed entirely and the poor animals sent to refuges -- especially Billy. It is criminal and inhumane what we do to these poor animals.

Chicago style pizza is not "crust stuffed with cheese". Classic Chicago style pizza is deep-dish pizza. The pizza you had, likely Giordano's, is in fact a stuffed-crust pizza, which is a variation of the authentic and original deep dish. You should have gone to Due's or Uno's!

Gateways description is a place for treatment of mental sickness. That's true but what's been left out is that its patients come from the criminal justice system.

The Department of City Planning staff persons who were working on this case were unaware of this aspect, since Gateways has left it out of their application.

Gateways representatives have said this variance is just a formality and compared the 9 rooms/ 18 beds in the new building to a “Bed and Breakfast”... Think about it...?

Looking through the zoning code a more accurate description would be "Correctional Institution".

So you have to ask yourself, would I be willing to let a Correctional Institution expand in my neighborhood with lack of adequite supervision (which the neighbors testify to)?

If you're open minded, the answer might be "I would be supportive of" - if the people running the facility were transparent and you felt that they had the welfare of the community in mind.

But that hasn't been the case.

The misleading statements, the resistance to the community liaison, all that took many, many months for the SLNC Urban Design & Preservation Advisory Committee to help improving. The communication and the trust! As it's clear from the article, the issue is not "adding 3 more beds". The issue is that 18 patients are going to be moved outside the supervised campus and will be able to enter the public street on their own, in a residential neighborhood with lots of children in it.

There is not lack of compassion, but an apeal for better communication and improved supervision at the Gateways facility.

We hope that maybe given time things will improve, but not now.
Trust takes time to develop.

I hope the LA Zoo can get through this tough economical time. They've already survived the unnecessary onslaught of criticisms from the animal rights extremists, including much of the Hollywood community. Privatization might be a good idea for the Zoo. It has worked well for good zoos in Indianapolis, Phoenix, and now in Dallas.

dear ms ferraro - just posted what is posted below to mr garcetti per his article re the depth and breadth of city budget cuts. i post it here because it directly addresses your point re the empowerment of neighborhood councils. thanks for this awesome newspaper and forum, btw - warmly - charlie

dear mr garcetti –

my name is charles herman-wurmfeld, and i’m a filmmaker running for an at large seat on the SLNC… i was at a council meeting last night (my first) and there is certainly much concern about the impending city cuts and what this will mean in general for the future of the neighborhood council activity.

just tonight i was at orientation for candidates – very professionally assembled by our friends Betty and Gabby at the LA department of neighborhood empowerment – and again heard from all candidates a similar concern. some even wondered why both running when there may be no money to utilize to better our communities.

this brings me to my point: please consider granting each council in the city the right to fundraise on a per project basis. for instance, if we want to install a rain catchment to water our park, or an organic garden at one of our schools, or plant trees near unsheltered bus stops, or help expand our local healthcare clinic, or build a community solar network, or create local public transit – let us raise money on a per project basis to care for ourselves where the city, state and federal governments are pulling back.

considering the times, this is the least the city can do – give us the power to organize to help ourselves.

thank you for your continued hard work, dedication and attention.

warmly –

wonder how it would feel to be a mentally ill, homeless person who is being denied a bed right now at gateways...

surely we can keep our streets safe, communities peaceful, and provide for the mentally ill, the homeless. if we don't take care of one another there is no city, state or federal net - it's all us now.

i'm surprised that the community could not find a solution that could keep residence feeling safe, and still allow for this (modest) expansion.

i wasn't at the meeting, but reading this article had to speak out.

i am campaigning with silverlake forward for a general seat on the SLNC - so please come out march 20th and vote for (hopefuly) silverlake forward candidates or your candidate of choice.

welcoming dialogue on this - would love to hear more...

I am glad you are reporting on this except you must know that the church does not even have 20,000 active members in the USA, let alone 20,000 staff, lol! Their buildings are empty in many major cities and every day more and more former members are speaking up and against what the church has been doing., There are 3 or 4 major lawsiuts against the church at the moment and they are all labor related: human trafficking, illegal use of minors, not paying lawful wages, overworking employees and forced abortions as a condition of remaining in ones job post and with loved ones.

No church does what Scientology does. Their days are numbered, the walls are crumblng down and the truth is getting out with the help of thousand all over the world speaking up, protesting as well as through the aid of local, regional, national and international media who are not afraid anymore to report on this terrible cult organization.

"people get a lot of services and don’t produce much in exchange" Sorry to cloud the issue with facts, but one for one, staff get few services and usually work 100 hours/week, room and board conditions would Not be approved by OSHA or Labor Dept, or for that matter, the U.N. or any humanitarian organization.

Thousands have spoken up about the abuses, crimes and fraud, around the world, not a "few", and the evidence of what this sci group does to those who speak up makes the mafia look like good Christians.

What all should make note of is that over 6 decades, not once has this scientology corporation ever said: We welcome independent investigation. Not once.

The Scientology spokesthingies are really fond of dismissing the allegations of abuse by saying they're from a few disaffected members. A few has become a handful. Their numbers have now grown to platoon proportions. As Scientology segues from a feared entity to internet joke butt, more and more people have begun speaking out.

There are possibly more ex-Scientologists than practitioners now; many with similar stories to the six presented at the press conference.

Three of them are suing the cult for human rights and other abuses. Let's see how miz Simmons spins it when her "religion" is convicted of human trafficking, child labor, family disconnection and coerced abortions.

Should Marc and Claire Headley and Laura Decrescenzo win their court cases, the Scientology organization may have to open its money bags and compensate these people for decades of labor, work that paid from .36 to .50 cents an hour, if they were paid at all.

Every person who wasted years of their lives laboring for this noxious commercial enterprise disguised as a religion should receive compensation at a rate commensurate with their positions. Graphic artists, advertisers, videographers, writers; these jobs pay well over minimum wage. These victims are entitled to fair compensation.

And if the first three get it, those "few disaffected members" are going to come out in force.

This is going to be fun. BRB, making popcorn.

We lived in a duplex with the Markoffs for many years. Having Betty next door was such a blessing to me as I could always go there for help and support when I needed it. My parents and the Markoffs were best friends until my parents died, and it was always wonderful having two men - Morrie and my father - who could do anything! Morrie and Betty have so much to be proud of. I agree with Judith - their marriage wasn't luck at all. I was witness to the love, affection, fighting, caring and devotion of these two wonderful people.

Morrie, Betty and their daughter Judith were my surrogate family during a most difficult time in my childhood. I lived across the street in one of the Gregory Ain condos then known at "Red Hill." Their encouragement was vital to my life as a composer and a human being.

My family the Hunters and Anderson knew a Mr Markoff when they lived on Cerro Gordo in the 30s and 40s. We have photos of the Markoffs at our summer place on Balboa Island. Wonder if they are the same Markoffs. I live in Silver Lake now. My grandmother was Dr Helen Hunter and my parents Reg and Phyllis Anderson. I know they were fond of the Markoffs.

This is fantastic news! I live about a mile due south of that intersection and that craptastic sign is just above the tree line enough to be the blinding blinking frustrating focal point whenever I look out our bedroom window at night. I had not yet noticed it had gone dark, but I will most certainly look north this evening and savor its hopefully permanent demise.

How nice to see such grounded and lovely people featured. Far from "luck" they've both invested a lot of hard work into making marriage work, being healthy, and living their lives. They are indeed remarkable people and two of the very best grandparents any one could hope for.

That is Grandma and Grandpa. In addition to some high points said in the article, Grandma has always provided me with her lap to lay my head on when weary. And she still tickles my back for hours. At work, at home, in every circumstance (excepting decisions about my own marriage), I often ask myself, "What would Grandpa Morrie do?" and try to act accordingly. It generally results in letting some slight go, being generous of heart, and keeping my focus on what is genuinely important, important at the end of the day, and important at the end of a life.

It's terrific to see my parents featured as "lucky" lovers, but all those years didn't happen easily. Yes they have shared strong values and politics and travel but they continue to have their differences and are still alert and involved enough to fight things out. As uncomfortable as it is for the family, it just might be part of the secret of their longevity and alertness. Their philosophies still matter. People and neighborhood still matter and the world still matters. They are truly engaged in life.

Thanks for featuring them.

Thanks for your astute political comments and cultural sensitivity as well as just taking the time to address THE MONSTER OF SILVER LAKE BLVD. I went to meetings, collected signatures from local residents who abhorred the sign, and prayed that the sign would somehow disappear. Just today I was hoping to hear some word about why it is suddenly dark. Glad to find a commrade!

My Father Alfred Katz believes that he knows Morrie from his days in Conn, where he was an employee of his Father Barney Katz. If Mr Markoff remembers our family my Father (now 98) would greatly appreciate hearing form him. He can contact him via his son Roger's email (address provided)
